Let me just say it: It was a great day when I finally read an S.A. Cosby book! I spent a lot of time looking for thrillers written by Black authors and clearly wasn't doing enough research to find them. My sister came through and insisted I stop whatever I was doing to read "All Sinners Bleed" by S.A. Cosby. We've been rocking ever since.
Naturally, I had to read "Blacktop Wasteland" in anticipation of his upcoming book, "Book of Ashes," coming this June—and it did not disappoint.
So what's the story? Meet Beauregard (or Bug, depending on who's asking). He's a husband, father of two, and drives like he's Lewis Hamilton. But life isn't going great. Not only does he have abandonment issues from his father leaving him when he was young, but he's also being crushed by bills and responsibility. When he's lured back into "the Life," it takes him on an epic, bloody, adrenaline-pumping ride—think Ethan Hawke in "Training Day," but with the brutality and tactical skills of Denzel Washington. Everything Beauregard loves is at stake when he sits behind the wheel. It's absolute fun, trust me.
See, here are the things I've come to love about Cosby's books.
First off, you get a strong Black lead who may have made questionable decisions in the past but wants to be better for those he loves—family, friends, all that.
You get a main character who is unapologetically willing to stick it to racist hillbillies, anytime, anywhere.
You get justified, fast-paced, non-stop chaos that will feed your hater soul.
And lastly, you get a sweet, satisfying end that feels like a home-cooked meal.
Cosby's writing is absolutely gorgeous and leaves you with thought-provoking themes of continuous internal conflict and the complicated nature of Black manhood and fatherhood in America. For lovers of Steve Cavanagh, Walter Mosley, and Dennis Lehane, you're sure to get grit, rawness, action, strong family ties, and introspection.
This was an easy 4.5⭐️ for me, and I highly recommend.
